The Institute of Indoctrination

Here is an excellent video that is worthy of your viewing. But before you do, please pay attention to the content as this subject is a highly charged issue that demands an opinion.

I am looking forward to some lively discussion.

DT,
I have a question. If children are taught at home, will it not depend on the capabilities of the parent on the kind of education that the children receive? Some parents might have the capability to explain things in an an interesting way while others, though they might be good christians, but not good teachers, might result in the children loosing all interest in education. And considering that education is also important in acquiring necessary skills to live in this world, I think it is a big risk (in a worldly sense) to say that all children should be home educated.

dk,

Perhaps that is a risk, but is it any less so than in schools? How many certified teachers are really all that good at, well, teaching? How many public school kids have essentially lost all interst in education after a few years in the schools?

ep,
how about the incapacity of the parent to teach certain subjects like Mathematics, Science etc

What about it?

Not to make light of math and science, but how strong is your argument until the high school years?

Plus, you're assuming that home school parents either don't have the education themselves to teach those things, or that they are unable to keep themselves up on developments in those areas.

But that is a criticism no less pertinent to public school teachers than to home school ones.

Anonymous (DK),

I have homeschooled my children (five of them) from the beginning. I would like to address a few of your questions.

My oldest (17) graduates this year. He combined seventh and eighth grades so he is a year ahead of schedule. He has mostly been self-taught all through high school. There is an abundance of curriculum options.

He works two full days a week as IT for a large construction company. He does so well for them that he has a guaranteed job upon graduation. They will even pay for college. He has self-taught himself CAD drawing there in the office, such that he is teaching others. He has been doing job site estimates and surveying.

Why tell you this? I'm not bragging, I'm pointing out that the whole point of an education is to teach another how to learn. I know none of the computer things he knows. He taught himself. How? By reading the help manuals and everything available in the computer programs. We have never bought a single textbook or curriculum on computer anything. Yet, I have to ask him questions constantly just to do my website. :) He also designs and self-hosts flash and html websites.

Yet, you missed the whole point of the video. What benefit is it to have the highest educated child who has no faith? Statistics show that the public schooled children are dropping like flies out of the church and rejecting their faith. I would rather have an illiterate garbage man who glorifies God as my child, than a Noble prize winning Surgeon who murders babies for a living and rejects God.

The other children are equally thriving in their areas of giftedness. Yet, I only have two years of college, probably obvious by the misspellings and grammar errors (my daughter wasn’t available to proof read it.) :)

Well said, Berean Wife, amongst many things.

dk,

Can you give me one good reason to have a group of people teach your children godless teachings along with relativistic views?

Think about it. Now kids are in the public school system for 14 years; pre-k-12th grade. They spend 6-8 hours a day with their peers and teachers who have more influence on your children than you do.

And to make things worse, the government wants to pour more money down the toilet by thinking that more money means better schools.

Foolishness!!

Discipline has been removed and sex has been introduced, ie. teachers seducing students, students having sex in class, homosexuals teaching their wickedness and sex education being taught by teachers that probably don't have the same values as you.

So, what have you gained? A government raising your children is what I say.

DT,
I have never given much serious thought on this issue. You have some very valid points. I used to think that people who do home schooling were a bit weird. Now I can understand their reasons. My children are 7 and 5 years old. I will definitely give this issue a good hard look.

dk,
most people have misjudged homeschooling and homeschool families. It's not your fault. I believe that is just from not knowing all the facts. I bet you will now do research on this and I am confident you will become a supporter. You may even join us!
